Is Google Increasing HTTPS Favoritism or Is HTTPS Adoption Just Increasing?
Google has encouraged webmasters to make the migration to a secure site for a while now, but this update this year doesn’t necessarily mean the search algorithm has changed more to feature secure sites. It could indicate a higher rate of adoption toward having sites on HTTPS. Google has stated that it will default to the secure version, if it exists, so as more websites move over to HTTPS, we would expect search presence of secure sites to increase.
Keep in mind, those sites ranking on page one of Google are also likely following many other best practices in order to gain and retain their valued page one real estate, so it’s not a surprise that of those ranking on page one, more are following Google’s heavy suggestion toward having a secure site.
Other reports, that while now almost half of page one search results are HTTPs, less than one percent of the entire web is.
