Facebook recently rolled out trending topics, a completely original idea that doesn’t copy Twitter at all. The general idea from Facebook is to make their social network the one-stop shop for news, human contact, and cat photos. The trending topics will come with a blurb about why that particular topic is trending.
In this example released by Facebook, the Golden Globes are trending because the Golden Globes had just recently happened. A truly fascinating wrinkle in the trending topic game.
One can assume that, over time, this will basically resemble Twitter’s trending topic line. While Facebook initially will keep the feature closely cropped to (fluffy) news items, they’ll allow for virility and, more importantly, paid trending topics.
But this isn’t exactly a #GameChanger if you’ve been paying attention to the social media war between Facebook and Twitter over the last year. Both are trying to one-up each other with increasingly similar features. But it’s fun to think about what trending topics we might soon see.
The Future of Facebook Trending
If there’s anything we can all agree on about Facebook, it’s that it’s a farm for high-quality, unique content. Ha, just kidding. It’s mostly babies and cats. So based on what we know about Facebook’s current content, here are some things we can expect to see from Facebook trending topics.
#Babies #MoreBabies #ValidateMyParenting: That’s right, if you keep posting pictures of your small child, they might just become Facebook famous.
#Cats #LookAtMyPet OH look my cat thinks he’s people!: As somebody who professes his love for cats in his Blue Corona author bio, I’m unopposed to this. If it were up to me, Facebook would only be pictures of cats. CatBook. Hold on, I’m pricing out domain names…
#Politics #PoliticalNews #OnlyMyOpnionMatters: I’m really excited for “that guy you’re still friends with on Facebook from high school for some reason” to try to take his #HotPoliticalTakes to the mainstream. You know the guy I’m talking about.
#Sports #Athlete’sName DID YOU SEE THAT SPECIFIC PLAY: Again, guilty. True story: right after I started at Blue Corona I went through all of my Facebook statuses and a depressingly high number of them was basically just my favorite team’s name in all caps. I’m a great Facebook friend. You’ll find me jockeying for position with the masses here.
#BadDay #YouKnowWhoYouAre #NobodyUnderstandsMe: I predict that vague, subtext heavy Facebook statuses are the biggest potential market inefficiency for Facebook Trending. Amazingly, that one person on your feed who always posts these short, complaining statuses is not the only person with feelings.
