Pictured above: the same damn thing. But layout aside, new Twitter has some nifty new features. And while everybody’s favorite 140 character-limit social media tool remains depressingly unprofitable, at least they have some cool new stuff. And really, isn’t that all that matters? (Note: that is not all that matters).
So What’s New with New Twitter?
Well, as you can see, there’s a super-duper new banner image. As somebody who, prior to this update, was rocking a super tiny screenshot of a web comic, this update kind of threw my Twitter game for a loop. If your business page has recently switched over to the new layout, be advised to make sure your banner picture is 1500 pixels x 500 pixels. Fortunately, Twitter’s development team is pretty good at outward-facing stuff like this, and has put up a really useful page with correct Twitter image sizes for any device or display. Look at you go, Twitter.
Also new: “pinned Tweets,” “best Tweets,” and “filtered Tweets.” Let’s break it down:
Best Tweets – Basically, when your Tweets start to get engagement, they’ll show up bigger than your less-engaged Tweets.
Pinned Tweets – Remember back when your Facebook status was always at the top of your Facebook profile so that one song lyric that like, really spoke to you would have prominent positioning on your profile? Twitter is bringing that back. You can take one Tweet and pin it to the top of your profile’s timeline. This is useful if you have important information regarding your company that you want to make sure people can see—closing, important news, new location, etc.
Filtered Tweets – When somebody visits your profile, now they can filter your tweets into the following categories: just text, Tweets with photos/videos, or Tweets and replies. This means users have more of an ability to search through your profile’s history—which makes having a strong Twitter presence even more important!
