There’s been another Penguin update? Yup. It has been a good while (almost two years—Penguin 3.0 was rolled out on October 17, 2014), but it’s back. Penguin 4.0 just rolled out. And guess what? Penguin is now a real-time signal processed in Google’s core search algorithm! In other words, as pages get crawled and indexed, they’ll be evaluated by the Penguin filter.
What Does It Mean for You?
Unfortunately, Google algorithm updates are out of your control—out of our control, out of everyone’s control. But there are some things you can control to help your online presence in this sudden real-time-Penguin world.
One word: quality.

Related to that, my biggest pieces of advice are this:
Write Good Content
Yes, links are still important for building your site’s authority and helping boost your rankings. And we all know quality comes before quantity (every time!). What’s the best way to get high-quality links? Write good (read: link-worthy) content. Make it relevant. Make it unique and engaging. Link to external sources (make sure they’re reputable). Also, make sure it’s optimized for the web so it can actually be found and linked to.
Build Good Links
Adding your website to directory after directory is probably not the best way to go, especially if those directories are spammy or have low domain authorities. Stick with reputable sources—think industry association sites (NATE for heating and cooling contractors, NKBA for remodelers, etc.) and the like. Does your company participate in a rebate program with a local utility company? Make sure you’re listed on that utility company’s rebate program website page. Did you participate in the Parade of Homes? Try to get a link to your site. Read great link building insights from SMX East 2016!
And stay on top of your s*** in Google Search Console. Don’t go weeks without checking.
