Why Are My Competitors Outranking Me on Google?
If you are like most business owners, you have probably searched for your company on Google. And if you aren’t currently investing in SEO, chances are the results weren’t exactly what you were hoping for. You may have even seen some of your biggest competitors ranking higher than you for important keywords.
Let’s See Where You Stand.
Go to Google.com and type in the name of your company. You most likely rank pretty well for a branded search like this, but let’s take a look at the other people ranking for you company name. Do you see other competitors in the results?
Now type in a generic search—let’s try “field of business + location” so maybe it’s “remodeler Charlotte, NC.” Who has the first spot, the second spot, and the third spot? Change your search a little bit. Now who comes up? Right now, you may be wondering how the heck Joe Schmo is outranking you for every keyword you search.
Before I began my career in marketing, I didn’t put much thought into Google results or why one company might rank higher than the other. All I cared about was that when I searched for pizza, I would find a company, call, and 30 minutes later I was eating cheesy goodness. Now, I can look at a website and tell you in a few minutes whether they are investing in SEO and why they may rank higher than you.
So Why Is This Company Outranking Me for Multiple Keywords?
When a user types in a search query, Google wants to provide that user with the webpages that are the most relatable to their search. To do this, Google looks at:
- Whether your website is secure (HTTPS vs. HTTP)
- If your website is mobile-friendly
- Schema markup
- Webpage content quality
- Webpage content length
- Page speed
- Social signals
- Quality backlinks
- Optimized images
- Domain age
If your competitor is ranking higher than you, it is most likely because they outrank you in most or all of these features. They might have more relevant content, more credible sites linking to them, or a really strong site structure. This could be because they are actively investing in SEO.
