How Many IT People Does it Take to Update Your Website?
If you’re from this area, you’ve definitely heard of McCormick Paints. Last year, the company came to us in need of a new website. One of the company’s biggest pains with their current site was that it was hard to update.
Maybe you’ve experienced this yourself for your business’s website. You want to make a simple change to your website—remove a coupon that’s expired, add someone new to the meet the team page, publish a new blog post, update the copyright in the footer, etc.—and you have to send it to your web guy/gal to take care of for you.
For small businesses, you might not even have a web guy/gal to take care of this for you! So how did we make it easier for McCormick Paints to update their website? We moved them over to a user-friendly content management system.
What Is a Content Management System?
A content management system (CMS) is a piece of software, integrated with the coding of your website that makes it easy for you to add, change, or remove content from your website with very little or no technical knowledge!
Content management systems (CMS) have been popular since the early 2000s as a way for anyone to create content on the web without having to be a web developer.
At Blue Corona (and pretty much everywhere else in the world), our CMS of choice is WordPress—which is what we used for McCormick Paints’ new site.
But wait! Isn’t WordPress a blogging site?
Well yes. WordPress, was released in 2003 primarily as a blogging engine and has quickly grown to become the dominant CMS on the web. Over 12.7 million sites are built on WordPress—just under 50% of all sites built on a CMS.
Why We Recommend WordPress Sites for Small Business Owners
Easy to Update
For most small business websites, WordPress is the way to go. The WordPress editor is extremely easy to use and functions almost exactly like a word processor. You don’t need to be “techy” at all to understand the basic features of WordPress.
Easy to Customize
In addition to being user-friendly, WordPress also has thousands of free plugins and themes. Plugins help with everything from search engine optimization (SEO) and social media sharing and themes allow you to customize the look/feel of your WordPress website with minimal (if any) graphic design and programming experience. Web design companies like Blue Corona can help you create your own completely custom themes (website designs) and extend the functionality of various plugins.
Easy to Track
All of your marketing and advertising strategies can and should be tracked, and WordPress makes it easy to figure out where your leads are coming from. At Blue Corona, we use a lead tracking WordPress plugin called Leadin to show our clients how effective or ineffective each of their advertising strategies is at bringing in new leads:
Easy to Crawl
Your website code and structure is a crucial foundation for your search engine optimization (SEO) success because search engine bots need to be able to crawl your website. Content management systems like WordPress are very beneficial when it comes to improving your website’s organic ranking because they automatically create optimized website code and site structure. Plus, they make it extremely easy to add new content to your website—which is also crucial for SEO.
Can I Move My Current Website to WordPress?
Yup! Many of our clients come to us with websites not on WordPress, and we begin our relationship by taking the existing site and moving it onto the CMS in a one-for-one swap—maintaining the original design and functionality of the site while making it easier to update.
And in case you’re wondering, McCormick Paints is very happy with their new website and content management system. In fact, I believe the word President Casey McCormick used was thrilled. Check it out:
“We are very pleased not only with the end result, but with the entire process of working with Blue Corona. The amount of patience, guidance, and knowledge that they displayed throughout the whole process made them a very easy and enjoyable partner to work with. We are thrilled with our new website, mobile site, and content management system. We would recommend Blue Corona for any website development or redesign project.”
