How to Write Title Tags for Your Website
Already understand what a title tag is and the role it plays in SEO? Feel free to skip on down to: How to Write Title Tags for Search Engine Optimization. Need a refresher on this topic? Start reading here!
Why Do Title Tags Matter?
Getting your pages to rank well on search engines such as Google is no easy task. So why do so many people go through the trouble of optimizing their websites for search engines? Because growing your online presence is arguably one of the best ways to grow your company. In this day and age, most of our country, even most of the world, has become reliant on the internet for quick and easy access to information. Wondering just how popular online trends have become? This year, internet users in the United States have reached an all-time high of 88.5% of the population.
People aren’t just turning to the web for entertainment or directions to the closest Panera – they are making purchases online too. Did you know that 69% of U.S. adults shop online at least once a month?
With so much engagement and business occurring online, it’s important to get your own web pages ranking. To optimize your pages, you can start by updating title tags, meta descriptions, and page content.
What Is a Title Tag?
So you get that these title tag things are important but what actually are they? When someone refers to a title tag, they are talking about that larger blue text that pops up on search results. This blue text is meant to briefly describe the content of the page using keywords, while the meta description below gives a slightly more detailed overview of the page content. Title tags play a large role in user experience and SEO. This text makes it easier for users to scan a search engine’s results and determine which page will give them the best information relating to their search. More importantly, these tags tell Google what a page is about. The pages with the best and most relevant title tags are more likely to rank higher.
Title Tag Tips for Search Engine Optimization
Now that you get the importance of title tags when it comes to SEO and user experience, let’s learn how to write good ones! At Blue Corona, we track and test data every day to come up with the best practices and strategies for growing website presence online. So no, we didn’t come up with these tips off of gut instinct, we have the data to prove that they work. As a best practice, start by using these four strategies to create your title tags:
- Keep them short (stick to around 70 characters including spaces)
- Keep them relevant to the page topic
- Use keywords (preferably ones that are searched frequently)
- Don’t write duplicate title tags for any of your pages
Ready for an example? Let’s pretend you own Bob’s Bike Shop in Fairview, Connecticut and you want to write a page featuring bike pumps. You should use a title tag that looks similar to this:
Bike Pumps in Fairview, CT | Bicycle Shop | Bike Tire Pumps
This title tag uses keywords that accurately describe the page and are searched often by Connecticut internet users.
How Do You Know How Often a Keyword Is Searched?
In tip #3 above, we recommend you use keywords that are searched frequently. And there are tools for this! Now if you don’t have access to the paid version of Keyword Planner, you can try using the unpaid version. What’s the difference between the two? The unpaid version will give you broad ranges of keyword statistics instead of exact figures. Are you looking for an experienced team of SEO experts to take care of all this for you? When you choose to work with Blue Corona, you can rest easy knowing that our experts have everything under control. In order to get your website the results you need to bring in new leads, we will assign an assortment of specialized SEO professionals to your site. Our experts include: content marketing specialists, pay per click specialists, web designers, account managers, and web masters.
Do I Really Need to Write Unique Title Tags for Every Page?
Yes. You will want Google and other search engine to see each of your pages as a unique source of information. Now this doesn’t mean that keywords can’t be re-used. Your title tags are allowed to be similar to one another, especially if you have hundreds or thousands of pages linking from it. When you start using identical title tags on unique pages, Google gets confused and could pull the wrong page to include in search results.
