10 Years In: What We Learned After a Decade of Helping Companies Grow
If you haven’t yet heard, Blue Corona turned 10 years old this past year. This is a significant milestone for any business—about 70 percent of small businesses fail within the first ten years. Blue Corona has not, and in fact, it made the Inc. 500 and the Inc. 5000 for seven years running—a feat that only 3.5 percent of companies accomplish.
When we look at our growth, we have a small sense of the magnitude of this accomplishment. The Charlotte office has nearly doubled in size over the past two years, both in office space and employees, and the Maryland office is nearly unrecognizable when you compare it to five years ago. New roles and teams have been created as the company and its employees grew. Many of us changed teams and roles and grow in our abilities every single day. Blue Corona’s business as usual today very literally looks almost nothing like it did back when we started.
To get some insight into the overall magnitude of how much we’ve grown as a company and why we asked several senior team members to share some fun anecdotes and historical knowledge. We knew there would be similar stories and answers across the board to some of our questions, but there were two universal similarities in the answers to these critical questions:
- What has been the #1 contributing factor to our success? Our team.
- What’s your 10-year lesson that, looking back, you’d share with yourself at the beginning or tell a new employee? Any problem you have today is a growth opportunity. You can reframe any problem as a challenge and tackle it accordingly. Never underestimate your future self’s ability.
Having such identical answers to these questions stood out to us not only because it demonstrates cohesion, but also because it is illustrative of who we are as a company.
Blue Corona’s Secret Sauce: Our Core Values
Blue Corona runs on seven core values:
Our core values serve a number of purposes, including:
- Deliver the best possible service with data-driven results
- Develop and maintain our company culture
- Inform our everyday decisions
The Biggest Contributor to Our Success: Our Team
Core value #4: develop the best people. This is a core value because without this as a priority, we wouldn’t be successful. We’re a people business—we need to hire, maintain, and develop the best people in the business in order to be the best in the business. Our people are a part of our product, so cultivating that internal culture is absolutely critical to our success.
As a fast-growing business, developing the best people becomes an increasingly complex objective. This core value is the North Star of our hiring process because being a cultural fit is critical to Blue Corona success. We know we do great work—so we need team members who are intrinsically motivated to contribute to that. Our hiring process is continuously examined and revamped to ensure candidates are comprehensively tested to be a good fit, both technically and culturally.
The Biggest Lesson Our Leadership Has Learned
To develop the best team, every employee needs to have this growth mindset: to think and act like an owner and be unafraid to tackle a problem. That’s where the aforementioned reframing comes in. We often joke about how the busiest, most haywire days in the office are some of our favorite days because they feel like a game where we’re the players and our to-do list is a maze we have to conquer.
This simple reframing makes a crazy day feel fun and almost special. After all, not every day feels like a game. And not everyone can adopt this sort of mindset. But we can tell you that every Blue Corona employee can relate to this anecdote and point to a moment where they went into “game mode” and conquered whatever challenge was at hand.
What has sustained Blue Corona’s culture (and therefore, our success) is this: that we all can understand the magnitude of our company’s growth. Many companies lose this after growing beyond a certain size, but not us. The culture has remained strong, the lessons have been passed on, and the growth has continued in such a way that we get it.
Each one of us can speak to the degree to which each individual team has grown, how our approach and strategy have evolved, and why we’re better than we were yesterday. That kind of knowledge requires a cohesive, supportive team who wants to pass on the “tribal knowledge” to make even the newest team members understand the growth that they’re “inheriting” and will soon be claiming for their own. Passing that on to every new employee is critical—one that is vital to our continued growth and success.
Where We’re Heading
We’re looking forward to another 10 years of success. The same kind of success where we keep doing things the same way we’ve been doing? No way. Our data-driven approach demands constant adaptation to the ever-changing algorithms, client needs, and the overall digital landscape that comes with the digital marketing territory.
In case you couldn’t tell, we really care about what we do, both for our clients and for our employees. If you’ve been looking for a digital marketing partner who delivers great work from great people, Blue Corona is the agency for you.
