What Does Optimized for Mobile Mean?
Our smartphones—they’re not just for Flappy Bird. It’s 2014 and hopefully you’re no longer relying on the Yellow Pages to advertise your business. Like the smart business owner you are (does flattery still get you everywhere? No? It was worth a shot.), you’ve shifted your advertising budget to the Web and realized that search engines are the new Yellow Pages and Facebook is the newspaper.
But much like Beyoncé came and changed the meaning of a seemingly innocent word (watermelon, I can never look at you the same way), smartphones came and changed the search engine marketing game.
More and more people are using their smartphones or tablets as opposed to desktop computers and laptops to perform Internet searches. In fact, by 2015, search experts (which unfortunately you cannot abbreviate as “sexperts”) predict that mobile search will officially eclipse desktop search. This makes sense if you think about it; when I’m sitting on my couch binge-watching Arrested Development on Netflix, I’m not going to get off my Hugh Jass to Google the number of my local Chinese food restaurant on my most likely uncharged laptop in the other room.
But once you’ve performed your search query on your smartphone, chances are you’ve probably found yourself on a website that doesn’t display very well on your tiny screen. After several seconds of zooming and pinching and failing to navigate the site with your clumsy, sausage-like fingers, you hit the back button to try another result. No big deal—the Internet is a big place and you’re certain to find what you’re looking for elsewhere.
However, it IS a big deal if that website is your company’s website and that mobile traffic has no choice but to head back to the search engine results and find one of your competitor’s sites that displays better on their mobile device.
The solution? Your website needs to be optimized for mobile.
How to Optimize Your Site for Mobile Devices
Most companies take one of the following two routes to optimize their sites for mobile:
Note that neither a mobile site or a responsive design is an app. Some business owners back away from the idea of a mobile site thinking that it’s some complicated, techy app. It’s not.
Of the two, creating a responsive website design generally takes more of a time commitment. However, this is the option that Google says it prefers.
With that being said, some industries might be better served by a custom mobile site, where customers are really just looking for directions to your location or for your phone number to call you. And as long as this mobile site doesn’t cause a lot of smartphone errors that Google frowns upon, you should be okay SEO-wise.
