How to Write Content that Ranks Well on Google
Every business owner wants to see their company succeed online. One of the best ways to bring local traffic to your website is through Google searches. Is your company getting the spotlight it deserves on Google? If not, you will want to implement some strategic SEO practices to up your rankings.
Did you know that the first three listings on every Google search capture 61% of all clicks? Let’s get your listing to the top!
How Do I Check My Google Rankings?
Since personalized search is in effect, one quick and easy way to check your true rankings is by searching your listing in a new “incognito” window. To open this window, first click on the menu button in the top right corner of your chrome browser. (Hint: this small icon may have three parallel lines or dots).
Want a faster way to open this browser? Try using this shortcut: press Ctrl + Shift + N
If you are still having trouble opening the incognito window, see Google’s instructions here.
Now that you have your incognito window open, try searching for the service your business provides in combination with the different cities you want to rank in. Let’s imagine you own “Papa Pauly’s Plumbing” company in Boston. You would search “Plumbers in Boston, MA” or “Boston Plumbing Repair Service.” Where does your company show up on the first page? Do you see it at all? Sometimes pages don’t even rank for their intended search and this is because their SEO game simply isn’t strong enough.
For a more accurate and thorough analysis of where your company stands against your competitors, we invite you to work with our team of trained SEO specialists at Blue Corona. If you’re not happy with the way your website is ranking now, keep reading to find out to write content that ranks better.
3 Ways to Improve Your Website Content
In order to get your pages ranking higher on Google, you will want to start by making some adjustments to any existing content on your pages. One important factor to keep in mind is that Google ranks pages individually. What does this mean for you? It means you will need to build out many different pages targeting different keywords. To rank well, having a website isn’t enough. You will need many different pages with unique content to be seen by Google. While there are multiple strategies for improving the content on your site, some will work better than others. Here are the top three ways that our leading internet marketing company uses to improve our own clients’ rankings:
Ranking Improvement #1 – Use Keywords
What is a keyword? Keywords are the words and phrases that internet users type into search boxes. To get your pages ranking on Google, you will want to strategically pick your keywords and distribute them throughout a page.
Let’s go back to our Papa Pauly’s Plumbing company as an example. If you were writing a page on toilet replacements, include high ranking key words in your page such as “toilet replacement” and “toilet installation.” Don’t forget to include geographic identifiers as well! For starters, you will want to include key words in your headings. Google uses each heading on a page as a ranking factor when delivering a user with search results. A great heading for this Papa Pauly’s toilet repair page would be “Toilet Installation & Replacement in Boston.” Including brand names are also a great idea if that brand is highly searched.
Where else should your keywords go? Keywords should be strategically placed throughout title tags and meta descriptions. Be sure to keep title tags to 70 characters and meta descriptions to 140 characters.
Let’s take a look at what this page should like on a google search once it goes live:
This is all great, but how do you find out which keywords you should try to rank for? You have two different options:
- Spend your valuable time learning the ins and outs of SEO and content marketing. Then implement different strategies to see what works.
Or…
- Hire a skilled internet marketing company for a fraction of this to perform research and make improvements for you! This way you can spend more time running your business and less time worrying about your Google rankings. Blue Corona offers extensive SEO and content marketing solutions to businesses throughout the United States.
Ranking Improvement #2 – Increase Word Count
Word count is a very important factor in terms of improving your rankings. The general rule of thumb here is that pages with higher word counts tend to perform better on search engines. Keep in mind that each individual page from your website receives a unique ranking, so it’s important to increase the word count on all of your pages, not just a few. At a minimum, no page on your site should have fewer than 500 words.
Over time, our internet marketing company has reviewed more than 10,000 HVAC and plumbing company websites and over 5,000 window and door websites. In all of this research, we have consistently found that higher word counts are helpful in getting pages to rank organically. The highest ranking HVAC and plumbing websites have, on average, nearly 900 words per page. Content appears to be even more important in the window and door industry. The highest ranking window and door sites had on average, just north of 1,600 words per page.
Ranking Improvement #3 – Optimize Outdated Pages
Google recognizes the “freshness” of a page by seeing when it was last edited or optimized. If a page on your site hasn’t been touched since 2010, Google might assume that it has outdated content and could automatically lower the page ranking.
To give users the best experience possible, it’s important to update your site with the most recent information you have available. Whether you have changed your maintenance agreement or you are promoting new monthly specials, be sure to go into your site as often as possible to change out this information. Even making minor content tweaks to pages that haven’t been touched in months can be helpful, particularly adding links to new pages you’ve created!
Getting Your Small Business to Rank on Google
Are you ready to get your small business ranking on Google? No matter the size of your company or your profitability, you have an equal playing field when it comes to the web. With the right SEO strategies and dedicated team, you could have your business ranking on Google in no time.
What non-content strategies will help you climb the Google ladder?
Hiring the Right SEO Company for the Job
If this is sounding like a bigger project than you have time for, no worries! The good news is that it’s quite cost effective to hire a reputable SEO or content marketing company. You will want to look for a company that:
- Has examples of case studies from for their current clients
