Now type in a generic search—let’s try “field of business + location” so maybe it’s “remodeler Charlotte, NC.” Who has the first spot, the second spot, and the third spot? Change your search a little bit. Now who comes up? Right now, you may be wondering how the heck Joe Schmo is outranking you for every keyword you search.
Before I began my career in marketing, I didn’t put much thought into Google results or why one company might rank higher than the other. All I cared about was that when I searched for pizza, I would find a company, call, and 30 minutes later I was eating cheesy goodness. Now, I can look at a website and tell you in a few minutes whether they are investing in SEO and why they may rank higher than you.
So Why Is This Company Outranking Me for Multiple Keywords?
When a user types in a search query, Google wants to provide that user with the webpages that are the most relatable to their search. In order to do this, Google looks at:
the website’s structure
the content on that page
and the authority they hold online.
If your competitor is ranking higher than you, it is most likely because they outrank you in most or all of these features. They might have more relatable content, more credible sites linking to them, or a really strong site structure. This could be because they are actively investing in SEO.
