How to Create a Professional Profile on Houzz
No matter the industry your company is in, getting in front of prospective customers is important. But having good visibility (in organic results and on social media) and getting those clicks is only half the battle! Once a user gets to your website or your social media profile, will they stay?
If you have an attractive, professional profile, it’s more likely they will. If your page looks like s***, you’re probably s*** out of luck. This is especially true for remodelers, home builders, and other companies in photo-centric industries, where appearance matters a lot. Where pictures really are worth a thousand words.
So it’s no surprise that many home remodeling companies, architects, landscapers, and other design professionals are on Houzz. Did you just complete a Houzz sign-up and are wondering how to go about creating a professional profile? I get it—you want to kill it on Houzz and social media so you can create a better online presence for your company, but you’re also busy running a business and have 753 things on your plate. Let me make this as simple as possible in a few easy-to-follow steps.
Create an Enticing, Professional Profile on Houzz in 5 Steps
Part of how to use Houzz for business is having an attention-grabbing, professional profile that users will find welcoming, informative, and attractive. It’s not as hard as it seems, I promise!
#1. Have a good profile photo and cover photo
Your profile photo will be seen frequently by the Houzz community—it represents your company everywhere, from discussions to directories. I recommend using the business logo or a professional headshot of the president or owner (you, perhaps) or another key person at the company. As for the cover photo, it’s large and one of the first thing visitors will notice when they land on your profile. Make sure it’s an image of some of your best work. Also, keep things fresh and up-to-date—change your profile/cover photo every three months or so (I suggest using the most appealing photos…choose ones that get saved to a lot of ideabooks).
#2. Show off your work (upload projects)
The more, the better! Uploading projects can be a great strategy for not only making your profile more appealing and professional but also increasing your visibility within the Houzz community and getting found by more users. And it doesn’t cost you a penny. Upload high-quality, high-resolution photos of every remodeling project (before and after pictures can be fantastic visuals) and optimize them using keywords with geo modifiers (in the photo descriptions and main project descriptions). Be sure to choose the best-looking photo as the cover photo of the project.
#3. Complete your profile as best you can
Your Houzz profile should be informative and look complete and up-to-date. A more complete, robust profile makes your company seem more reputable and trustworthy and helps boost your authority in the Houzz community among both users (prospective clients!) and other pros. This includes relevant categories, projects (as mentioned above), contact information, reviews, affiliations, and badges and awards (each Houzz badge and award can be seen as a vote of authority). Two of the most important I listed here are projects and reviews. Don’t have any reviews or not sure how to get them? Here’s how to get Houzz reviews.
#4. Update your profile regularly
A complete, informative profile is fantastic, but one that is updated on a regular basis is even better! Think about any social media platform—Facebook, Instagram, etc. They are fast-paced environments. There are updates every single day, multiple times a day! Houzz is the same way. If you are only posting ideabooks and pictures and answering users’ questions every two or three months, you are missing out. Every time you have new photos from a recent project you completed, post them on your Houzz page, with important keyword tags—which is how users can find your pictures within Houzz and even in the search engines—such as “white cabinets,” “modern kitchen,” “granite countertops,” “kitchen island,” etc. And I suggest posting an informational ideabook (with a link back to your website) on a monthly basis, at the very least. A repurposed blog post from your website can do the trick!
#5 Engage with the Houzz community
You’ll be hard pressed to find somewhere else online where more remodel-ready homeowners are in one place. Houzz has millions of users who are in the “home design” mindset. If you aren’t engaging these prospective customers, you’re missing a massive opportunity. Houzz users can browse your photos and they’ll often ask questions about design features in them—questions that you can answer.
By following these steps, you can get the whole package—a good-looking, professional profile on Houzz! And the best part is, you can do all of this for free. Adding high-quality pictures, answering questions, getting reviews, posting a relevant category…all of that can be done without paying a cent. There is no Houzz pro account cost. The basic pro account is free and can look good awesome!
For those who are looking for a bit more and have a larger budget, an upgrade is available: Houzz Pro+. How much does it cost to advertise on Houzz? It depends on the number of categories (architects, interior designers, builders, etc.) and service areas/regions your company wants to be associated with. And certain categories and service areas vary by cost as well. Learn more about the cost of advertising on Houzz »
