Recently, I came across this: http://hundredpushups.com/test.html (thanks Robb). It’s a 6 week program to help you do 100 push-ups. For those of you out there that are super-fit, this probably doesn’t sound like much. But for those with businesses, kids, etc., let me tell you – doing 100 straight push-ups is a serious feat!
The process for doing 100 push-ups is simple – take a test to determine exactly where you are today. Then, based on the results of the test, begin the program and follow it for 6 weeks. Hundreds of people have followed the program and have successfully completed 100 push-ups – people of all abilities, starting from all different levels of fitness.
Everything that you need to do to join them is detailed on the website in an easy to follow process. Even still, I’m willing to bet that more than half the people that start this program, skip the initial test and go straight into the program. The result – I’ll bet most of them quit and fail.
Testing is important – following a process is important.
In some ways it’s the same with advertising and marketing. Everyone wants to dive right into the marketing fun. Few have the patience to spend the time to better understand where they are today. As a result, most small business owners don’t grow the way they wanted to grow.
If you’re serious about improving your advertising and marketing, you MUST first figure out exactly where you are today. Tracking and testing MUST precede the marketing fun.
What? You don’t have time for it? To flippin’ bad! Do it right or don’t do it at all. You’re too small to need tracking? Then you’re probably too small to be advertising. Get out ad sell door to door and get bigger first. You already have Google Analytics and you’re already tracking? Great – what’s the conversion rate of your website (what’s a conversion rate?), what are you testing this month based on your Analytics’ data?
Having data isn’t enough – you have to DO something with it or hire someone else to do it for you!!
Whether you are working toward doing 100 push-ups or doubling your website’s traffic, you’ll get consistently better results if you start by accurately determining where you are today. Chant it with me – test, track, test, repeat! Now, get down and give me 100 😉
